Deer and Coyote in the Garden

outside in pools of water

that accumulate around a leak in the hose

more mint grows there than in the shadow

you once put a leaf beneath my tongue

to suck on

before the sun rose

before raccoons had found their supper

and before you bit my fingers

leaving marks

but none too deeply

i heard you howl

then shudder with your fur coat rissen

an arch above your spine, coyote

the mint all green and fragrant

against my back

i looked directly

into those closed eyes
